Dear Self Publisher

Did you know that you can own your book press and print your books at home for less than 99 cents per book?

Before now, self-printing was not even a word in my vocabulary. But since I began self-printing my own books in 2020, I’ve had financial breakthroughs of unbelievable proportions, namely:

I have enjoyed seeing many of my childhood dreams come true after I built my book press. I have elevated my financial status to unimaginable levels after I began self-printing my books.

In 2021, I bought my favorite SUV and paid the dealer in cash. I was offered financing for the car with easy, monthly payments, but I didn’t need the debt.

In 2021, I bought my first house with several acres of land and I fully paid for them in cash. I was offered a mortgage, but I didn’t like the terms.

In 2021, I got married to my sweetheart and we had a lavish wedding. Also in 2021, I registered my business as a legal entity in the US and expanded my operations internationally.

Since 2021, exactly one year after building my book press, I control vast reserves in cash and crypto. Soon I will control vast reserves in gold.

Humble Beginnings

However, my life was not always so rosy. Just two years earlier, I was unemployed, depressed and broke. This was despite doing everything the self publishing gurus told me to do.

I hired the best editors for several rounds of editing. I hired the best professionals for my book cover and interior layout design, and spent thousands of US dollars on online advertising.

The problem was that while I was selling a lot of books, I was losing money every month. Even with a couple of bestsellers, all I did was break even on my best days. None of this made any sense to me.

Where is my money

So I started an investigation and started digging deep. I wanted to uncover the facts, not opinions, of self-publishing. To cut a long story short, I wanted to know why I was such a loser.

What I discovered changed my perspective about self-publishing and forced me to make a drastic change in how I self-publish my books going forward.

The first thing I discovered was that following the experts’ advice was bankrupting me fast. The publishing experts told me to invest in the Kindle version of my top-earning book, which I did.

However, my advertising results showed me that customers were only interested in the paperback version of my book. One hundred percent of my sales were orders for my print book.

Distorted Amazon results

My Amazon campaign showed me that ACOS was 45 percent, and my ROI was 55 percent, but Amazon was only sending me 20 percent in royalties due to printing and other Amazon-associated costs.

So, even though my ad campaign recorded a 55 percent gross profit, I was actually generating a 50 percent gross loss per sale.

As expected, I increased my book price to adjust for the losses. As soon as I did that, my book sales volume dropped by 50 percent.

I was selling between 40-60 units before the price adjustment, but my sales volume plummeted to 20-30 weekly after I raised the price.

The message is clear. Firstly, my readers prefer to have a physical book they can carry around. Secondly, my readers will buy more if the price is lower. But I would not know this if I did not have a system that allows me to control, track and tweak my results.

Just raise your price

You can’t simply raise your book retail price because of a hike in printing costs and still expect the sales party to continue.

Book buyers are intelligent. They know a good deal when they see one. They can also sense if your book is overpriced because they have a great sense of value.

The initial price of my paperback book was $6.99 US, and I thought that was a fair price for the book’s length even though I was only receiving $1.89 per copy sold. After I raised the price to $8.99, my royalty increased to near $3.

I was no longer losing money, but I was not making money either. I was now effectively stagnated. When Amazon paid my royalties into my bank, they took it back in the form of advertising fees.

Zero growth at Amazon

It was daunting to look at the numbers. I was paying too much in Amazon printing costs. I was paying way too much in Amazon advertising.

I realized that if I paid just half of what Amazon KDP charges for printing, I’d double my income instantly. If I paid 50 percent less in advertising fees, I could go from red to green in a flash.

I didn’t think paying less for my advertising was a good idea, but it made a lot of sense to reduce my book printing costs where I could. And that is exactly what I did.

If you can’t beat ’em, try again

I feel terribly sorry when I see authors trapped because they don’t know what to do when Amazon raises their KDP printing fees.

Or when I hear them share their tales of woes about their misadventures with third-party POD (print-on-demand) services. They make me feel lucky to be among the exception.

It is sad to see so many talented authors give up because they could not figure out how to print their books at home or even control their book printing costs.

Also noteworthy are those indie authors who choose to remain, defend and fight for the system that impoverishes them.

I can only pray for them because they’re all going to be wiped out. It is not a matter of “if” as it is about “when.” All they have to do is continue to depend on KDP or similar services for their book printing needs.

Earn more with lower prices

I hear many self-publishing gurus boldly advise authors to raise their book prices to compensate for any hike in KDP printing costs as if they’re ready to subsidize those authors for any decline in their sales volume. If you do that, it means you are a loser. Truly successful publishers know how to lower their book price and make more money.

Have you noticed that your sales volume plummets whenever you increase your book’s retail price? What if I show you how you can lower your book’s retail price and keep most of that money?
